Frock On Vintage by Andie Salazar

One step inside of Frock On Vintage on any given Thursday afternoon during their weekly happy hour immediately gives you a sense of exactly what this new addition to Austin’s array of vintage stores is all about. The racks of clothing are stocked with colorful prints, sequins, fringe and styles hand-picked from a vast timeline. The shelves along the walls hold everything from ladylike heels to playful hats to a banana yellow telephone. There is an ice bucket full of bottles on the front counter, and hair stylists massage mousse and wind hot curling irons through customers’ coifs as they sip glasses of wine.

Orange Salon By Katie Brown

Trying to find the right hair stylist is like trying to find your soul mate: it may take a long time and require a few tries to get it right. There may even be some tears involved. But when you've received the perfect hair cut, you'll know it's love at first sight. Heather Barclay, owner of the new Orange Salon, takes some of the guesswork out of finding the right stylist.

Fashion Freakout 5 By Andie Salazar

There's no better city than Austin to  find hidden treasures among bins of pre-loved blouses and racks of recycled skirts. This Friday, March 2, Austinites are invited to celebrate the lively vintage culture of their city at the fifth annual Fashion Freakout runway show. Hosted in The Mohawk’s Red River room, doors will open at 7pm for guests to mix and mingle before the models hit the runway at 9pm sharp.

2012 Atticus Circle Awards Luncheon By Andie Salazar

It can be hard enough to stand up for yourself in the face of adversity, let alone an entire society facing both cultural and legal discrimination. Atticus Circle is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing people with the opportunity to do just that, and its Awards Luncheon on Feb. 29 will recognize the bravery of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and their straight allies in fighting intolerance.

12th Annual Texas Film Hall of Fame by Katie Brown

It's no secret that everything is bigger in Texas – and that includes award shows. The Austin Film Society's 12th Anual Texas Hall of Fame Awards promises to be an extravagant affair film buffs won't want to miss.

Since 2001, the Texas Film Hall of Fame has honored Texas legends that have made a significant contribution to film, entertainment and music: Renée Zellweger, Dennis Quiad and Matthew McConaughey are all among the award's notable former recipients. This year, honorees include actor Barry Corbin, musician Meat Loaf, and filmmaker Douglas McGrath.

Mark Your Calendars! By Andie Salazar

Austin is blessed with an abundance of opportunities to spend your hard-earned cash. From the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar to Le Garage Sale, events centered wholly on shopping have become a huge hit throughout the city. And the crown jewels of the Austin shopping scene come in the forms of vintage wares and handmade goods.

This weekend, Austinites will have two opportunities to thrift through vintage treasures galore and one-of-a-kind commodities at the Austin Flea and the American Icon 29th St. Yard Sale. Fortunately held on different days, you can pencil both into your calendar to get your shopping fix.

"Disambiguation" at Red Space Gallery By Andie Salazar

A wide, stark space with polished wood floors, framed photographs and canvases lining the walls. This may be the image that immediately comes to mind when thinking of an art gallery. Red Space, however, is anything but.

Named after founder Caitlin McCollom’s favorite color, the gallery is actually housed inside an apartment. A trend on the rise, the apartment gallery represents a DIY solution to Austin’s need for new art spaces. McCollom first opened Red Space in Jan. 2011, hosting the premiere exhibit that April. In choosing shows for the space, she seeks out very experimental, conceptual art in forms such as performance installation and non-object works.
