Helms Workshop

Modern Times and Old School Design by Diego Vega

For most of us, design isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks about beer. Then again, Helms Workshop is anything but a conventional design firm, and its most recent collaborator, Modern Times Beer, walks a similarly distinctive path. Named after an 1850s Long Island utopian colony, Modern Times Beer is a San Diego-based brewery intent on leaving its mark as a “colorful, ambitious little pocket of history that develops in the folds of progress.”

Check out Christian Helm's newest project, Standard Grit. With a unique story and mission to "remind people of the value of craft," the collection features vintage-inspired designs and hand-drawn typography. Each flag is designed in Austin and crafted by hand in North Carolina. For more information about Standard Grit, check out their website at standardgrit.com.

Christian Helms' Perfect Austin Day

One of Austin's most renowned graphic designers, Christian Helms (who has worked with everyone from HBO and Toyota to Spoon and Modest Mouse), shares his perfect Austin Day. And, 2011 is off to a big start, as he just launched Helms Workshop and continues to be a co-owner of FRANK. He is pictured above in a portrait by one of TRIBEZA's favorite photographers, Jay B. Sauceda.
