Prepare To Be Found

As the holiday season merges into Valentine season, with the chilly winter temperatures and cozy inside activities, it is hard to ignore the fact that love is in the air.  Whether you are curled up with love already, or longing for it, this time of year is undeniably meant for snuggling.

If you are with your special someone, you can skip this article and go off and have a cup of coffee together or sip some wine by the fire, or choose a tiny table for two in the back of your favorite restaurant and talk about things in an intimate whisper, stopping to laugh self-consciously when the server stops by.

If you are not currently with your special someone, read on. What are you supposed to do if you want love in your life but it continues to elude you?  What happens when things repeatedly sputter or fizzle out after a date or two, and you think maybe you should try harder, lower your standards, or give up entirely?  What happens when you pour your time and effort into the search for love but come up empty?

The answer is simple.  Stop looking.  Instead, prepare to be found.  Refine yourself so that you will be conscious enough and wise enough to recognize love when it stands on your front porch, or sits across from you in a café, grabs your hand, or sends you an email.  Work on opening and broadening your heart, polishing your communication skills, honing your compassion, making peace with yourself, replacing expectations with a spirit of possibility and wonder, and resurrecting your passions, so that when someone special asks you about the things that hold meaning for you, you have an answer that is real and current and fresh as it rolls easily off your tongue.  Immerse yourself in the things and the people you already love, so that love becomes more a pervasive part of your daily existence and ordinary language rather than a dream you have about later.

Don’t wait to do the things you’ve always wanted to do, but think they sound more possible or appealing in conjunction with your soul mate.  Do them now.  If you always wanted to own a home, remodel your home, adopt a baby, own a dog, take a trip to a faraway land, go on a certain adventure, have a different career, learn a language, make a road trip, run a marathon, climb a mountain, or take a detour or diversion from the path you are on - make some strides in that direction.  Even if it seems counterintuitive or scary, remember that sometimes you have to rock your ride and step on the gas in order to get out of a rut.

My mom always told me that love finds you when you least expect it, when you are busy and happy with other things.  Be so distracted living your full, beautiful life that love has to tap you on the shoulder a couple times and clear its throat in order to get your attention.  Maybe it’s someone new that ‘randomly’ (ha, no such thing) crosses your path.  Or maybe it’s someone you have known for a long time, but were so blinded by counterfeits that you couldn’t see the real deal – until now.  Your person won’t be upset that you started living your dream before they arrived on the scene, because they will love your dream and be excited to share theirs.  Both of you will be confident and content knowing that this chapter was bookmarked from the beginning. Whoever it is and whenever it happens, it will be worth the wait.
