Bar Ilegal By Katie Brown

Artisanal mezcal has finally arrived in Austin, at Bar Ilegal. Located behind Clive Bar on Rainey Street, the bar lies in a striking, historic stone building and evokes the feel of a true, old-style Mexican cantina. The tiny, candle-lit space accommodates about 20 people and provides a dark and sexy ambience – the perfect atmosphere for sipping this strong and smoky offshoot of tequila.

Bar Ilegal is the only mezcal exclusive bar in North America and serves handcrafted, small-batched Ilegal Mezcal, which is considered as one of the top quality mezcals available in the United States. Mezcal is made and manufactured in Oaxaca, Mexico using the heart of the espadin agave plant that is baked underground over volcanic rock, then crushed by a traditional millstone drawn by a horse. It is then distilled in small batches and hand-bottled and numbered.

Bar Ilegal will serve Ilegal Mezcal flights as well as individual sippers, though they will likely add a variety of cocktails and infusions to the menu in the future. Come to Bar Ilegal not only for the mezcal, but for one of the most unique bar experiences in Austin. They are currently open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as well as other nights for private engagements. Visit the bar's Facebook and Twitter pages for more information.
