Judy Paul's Urban Folk By Katie Brown
On display at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is the vibrant artwork of Austinite Judy Paul, a mixed-media artist and trained graphic designer. Her exhibit, Urban Folk, includes an array of whimsical paintings that simply radiate childlike wonder with the natural world. Paul’s work utilizes a unique combination of acrylic paint, collage, pencil and screen-printing to render natural imagery and themes, including animals, birds and energy. Take a closer look, and you can see the fanciful details - polka dots, newspaper bits and pencil drawings - that bring Paul's pieces to life.
Paul states, “My goals are to continue with a process that is more fun than eating a banana split, to advance my skills as an artist and to make work that sparks connections with people.” Although Paul’s artwork may not be edible, her paintings can definitely be considered eye candy. Enjoy the Urban Folk exhibit for free admission throughout the month of January. The exhibit runs until March 11.
Digital versions of Judy Paul's distinctive work may also be viewed online.
