Mark Your Calendars! By Andie Salazar

Austin is blessed with an abundance of opportunities to spend your hard-earned cash. From the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar to Le Garage Sale, events centered wholly on shopping have become a huge hit throughout the city. And the crown jewels of the Austin shopping scene come in the forms of vintage wares and handmade goods.

This weekend, Austinites will have two opportunities to thrift through vintage treasures galore and one-of-a-kind commodities at the Austin Flea and the American Icon 29th St. Yard Sale. Fortunately held on different days, you can pencil both into your calendar to get your shopping fix.

The Flea is being held Feb. 11 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Highball. Typically put on monthly or bi-monthly, this Saturday’s festivity will feature nearly 50 vendors largely focused on handmade and vintage merchandise. With the goal to combine some of the best elements of the city’s culture, including vintage shops, art shows, food trailers and more, in one location, this is truly a flea market with an Austin twist and plenty of variety to go around.

If your shopping thirst remains unquenched, the 29th St. Yard Sale may just have what you’re looking for. Originally conceptualized by American Icon vintage shop owner, Jonathon Galyon, the event is held at Spider House’s 29th Street Ballroom and will bring together over 20 vintage clothing stores typically boasting fantastic prices for the occasion. Beyond vintage, handmade jewelry, records and art are also available. Running from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., this all-day event showcases two bands and offers a fun alternative to a Sunday afternoon spent at home.
