New York City: Sweet Tooth Edition

I’m a Texas girl at heart, but I won’t deny that the promise of a trip to New York sends a frisson of foodie delight down my spine. While I love Austin’s blossoming culinary scene, there’s something to be said for a city like New York with a bakery on every corner and divine pastries in every display case. Here is a roundup of my favorite places to satisfy a sweet tooth in the Big Apple.
Ladurée
864 Madison Ave.
(646) 558 3157
This Parisian icon just opened up its first stateside storefront last year, and New Yorkers are clinging to every crumb. From delicate flavors like violet and rose to the classic chocolate macaron, Laduree offers delectable desserts in bite-size portions. The gift boxes make wonderful souvenirs once you have devoured the last, airy confection.

Lady M Confections
41 E 78th St
(212) 452 2222
Austinites aren’t strangers to crêpes, given local favorites like Flip Happy. But my favorite crêpe concoction has to be the lesser-known mille crêpes or crêpe cake, made up of over thirty layers of crêpes with pastry cream between each one. One bite, and the layers simply unfold over the tongue, slightly sweet and wonderfully creamy.

Once Upon a Tart
135 Sullivan St.
(646) 808 3448
This quaint Soho bakery specializes in tarts of all kinds, both savory and dessert. My favorite is this chocolate walnut tart, which balances salty and sweet, creamy and crunchy. I loved it so much I had to bring one back on the plane with me!

Balthazar Bakery
80 Spring St
(212) 965 1785
I’m a sucker for a perfectly flaky pain au chocolat. There really isn’t anything like taking a bite through the seemingly infinite layers of pastry, only to arrive at an extravagant chocolate center. In Soho, the Balthazar restaurant serves up its renowned French cuisine, but right next door, you can purchase breads and pastries from its bakery outpost and eat on the go.

François Payard Bakery
116 W. Houston St.
(212) 995 0888
François Payard is heaven for the dessert aficionado. Although the bakery makes for a great lunch spot, featuring sandwiches quiches, and a fantastic Niçoise salad, my favorite is the Chocolate Chiboust Tart. This is the stuff of dreams. At the bottom is a layer of salted caramel, which offers a slightly salty balance to the rich chocolate ganache filling. Payard tops off the tart with the crunch of a chocolate sliver, pistachios, and hazelnuts. Perfection!
