Raven + Lily: Ethic and Aesthetic Make A Pretty Pair by Gracie Ramsdell

With Austin-based Raven + Lily, a new line of eco-friendly jewelry that aids women in impoverished areas of India and Ethiopia, you can feel morally-sound about the product that you’re investing in while also feeling good about looking great.

The line was started by Kirsten Dickerson and Sophia Lin, based on their passion for ethical design and their desire to help oppressed women. The system of production is so multi-faceted that it benefits its workers and their families in more ways than one.

In Northern Ethiopia, women who suffer from HIV are given employment through Raven + Lily, which can be hard to come by due to their illness and the gender prejudice that pervades these areas.

Vintage silver coins and artillery shells found on farmers’ lands are melted down into handmade beads, which are polished and buffed. The women then skillfully craft delicate, intricate pieces of jewelry that shimmer and glisten, so antithetical to the dull look of a sinister bullet. Their employment with Raven + Lily also provides these women with HIV care and educational opportunities for themselves and their families.

The fashions created in India are inspired by the undulating, organic designs that embellish the country, from arched pathways to the simple beauty of a piece of wood.

Marginalized Muslim women are provided with 100 percent recycled paper, created from old army tents, denim jeans, cotton rags, and newspapers. Local wood craftsmen work with these women to combine materials in order to create beautiful journals.

Wooden tags, hand-milled soaps, and metallic leather earrings are also crafted here. Employment and sustainability for these women provides hope for a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Not only has Raven + Lily transformed the way hundreds of women live, but they have also dedicated themselves to the aid of their partner communities, by donating a percentage of the proceeds towards their education, healthcare and micro-loans.
